Some diseases are more common during pregnancy. One of these diseases hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids) problem. Yeditepe University Hospital Gastroenterology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Cengiz Pata, “Pregnancy; By increasing the intra-abdominal pressure with the effect of the baby, it changes the bowel movements due to hormonal changes and leads to an increase in hemorrhoid formation. ”
: What is Hemorrhoids?
Assoc. Dr. Cengiz Pata: In fact, hemorrhoids are specialized balls that form a natural part of the anal canal, the part of our intestines opening outward. These cushions are covered with more intact connective tissue than normal vessels and serve to prevent tissue damage during daily defecation. Hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids) Disease is called as hemorrhoid disease due to sagging, widening and decrease in function of the hemorrhoidal cushions over time due to decreased connective tissue support. Hemorrhoids are common in our country and western societies and the incidence is approximately 50%.
: What are the symptoms?
Assoc. Dr. Cengiz Pata: We divide hemorrhoids into two main groups, internal and external, depending on the location of the site. External hemorrhoids may also be severe pain due to bleeding and thrombosis of the hemorrhoidal vein. Internal hemorrhoids may also be bright red, bleeding after defecation or causing contamination of the underwear. In addition, pain during stool, burning, itching in the breech, discharge and constipation due to them are symptoms of hemorrhoid (hemorrhoid) disease.
: Why does hemorrhoids problem increase during pregnancy?
Assoc. Dr. Cengiz Pata: Hemorrhoid cushions are blood vessels filled with blood, as we have already described. Impairment of blood flow, or increased external pressure against these cushions, which often occurs in cases of constipation, increased intra-abdominal pressure, causes weakening of the connective tissue forming these cushions and the formation of hemorrhoids. Pregnancy; By increasing intraabdominal pressure with the effect of the baby, it changes the bowel movements due to hormonal changes and leads to an increase in hemorrhoid formation.
: What measures should mothers take to prevent complaints?
Assoc. Dr. Cengiz Pata: Pregnant mothers should first of all avoid pregnancy dssüres, slim excess weight. Weight gain should not occur outside the limits of the monitoring physicians during pregnancy. In addition, diseases such as constipation and diarrhea that may develop during pregnancy should be treated before they become chronic and start to put pressure on hemorrhoids. Again, we recommend to expectant mothers if they are aware of such a condition before pregnancy or if they have doubts, they should apply to a gastroenterology specialist and have appropriate treatment before pregnancy.
: How is hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids) planned in pregnancy?
Assoc. Dr. Cengiz Pata: We divide hemorrhoids into four main groups. In the first and second stage, medication, laser, band ligation, sclerotherapy (needle therapy) and in the fourth stage surgical treatment is possible. 3. Stage hemorrhoids are treated using appropriate medical or surgical treatment. We avoid surgical interventions unless it is very necessary during pregnancy. However, other forms of treatment - with the exception of certain suppository medicines - may be used if necessary during pregnancy.
: Does it pass after birth? Does it have a permanent result?
Assoc. Dr. Cengiz Pata: Partial improvement may occur due to the disappearance of preparatory factors after birth. It is known that patients with stage 1 and 2 hemorrhoids have fewer problems after pregnancy. Other stage hemorrhoids should be treated with the appropriate method even after pregnancy.
: Does hemorrhoids prevent normal birth?
Assoc. Dr. Cengiz Pata: No way. However, if we have painful (thrombosed) external hemorrhoids as mentioned before, their prenatal treatment is appropriate.
