  • What should we include in our bedtime routine?

    Anything that's safe and soothing for your baby can be part of your evening ritual. For best results, keep it simple and follow the same routine every night.

  • Let off some steam

    Sometimes it helps to let your baby get pent-up energy out of his system before settling down for the night. Dance around with him to a favorite song, give him a "horsey" ride, or let him bounce in the bouncer if he's in the mood.

    As long as you follow up rowdy play with something calmer and quieter – like a bath and bedtime story – it can be the first step toward bedtime.

  • Soak in the tub

    A warm, soothing bath is the star of the bedtime routine in many families. Getting warm, clean, and dry can do wonders to ease your baby into bedtime. It also gives your partner a chance to spend special time with him, especially if you're breastfeeding and your partner can't help as much with meals.

    If your baby gets excited during baths or doesn't enjoy them, though, don't feel bad about leaving the tub out of your nightly routine. Babies don't need to bathe more than once or twice a week.

  • Take care of business

    Your baby's getting-ready-for-bed routine can include washing her face and hands, wiping her gums or brushing her teeth, a diaper change, and getting her into pajamas. It's particularly important to start the habit of teeth brushing at an early age so your baby will get used to it.

  • Play a game

    Playing a quiet game in the living room or on the floor of your baby's bedroom can be a fun part of your routine. It can be as simple as a round of peekaboo or stacking some blocks. Anything that entertains your baby without getting her too excited is fine.

  • Have a chat

    Bedtime is a nice chance to spend time talking to your baby. You don't have to wait until she's old enough tell you about her day. Simply review her day for her or tell her about yours.

    "After our son is in his crib, one of us sits in a rocking chair next to the crib with the light off and we talk about his day," says Heidi Sheppard of Louisiana. "It relaxes him."

  • Say "Goodnight Moon"

    Many babies enjoy being carried around the room or the house and saying goodnight to favorite toys, people, and other objects, much as the baby rabbit and his mother do in the classic book Goodnight Moon.

    "Our favorite bedtime ritual is saying good-bye and goodnight to the sun," says Kim Callahan of Vermont.

  • Read a bedtime story

    Reading a night-night story rivals the bath as an all-time favorite ritual. "We rock our son Adam and read two to four books to him every night," says Kira Palmer of Illinois. "He's been read to since he was 8 weeks old."

    Studies have shown that daily exposure to a large vocabulary can boost a baby's language skills and even intelligence. And your baby also benefits just from spending one-on-one time with you.

  • Sing a song

    Singing a lullaby is a time-tested way to help a sleepy baby drift off. Your baby loves hearing his favorite sound – your voice – and a soft, soothing melody may calm him. If you can't remember the words or tune to your favorites, visit our lullaby library.

    "I choose two different songs every night and then close with our 'night-night' song," says Susan Webb of San Francisco. "The kids have come to recognize that as the final goodbye."

  • Play some music

    Playing lullabies, classical music, or other gentle favorites while you settle your baby to sleep – and then leaving it on at low volume after you leave – can ease your baby's transition from being awake to dozing off. A sound machine playing white noise can help, too.
